There wasn’t much net slang in this thread, so I’d like to share a quick thought as the site admin.
Japan consistently ranks low in global happiness surveys, and I feel that this vague sense of unease—like what’s expressed in this thread—might be part of the reason.
Of course, this feeling isn’t unique to Japan. But in Japan, working five days a week with only two days off is the norm, overtime is expected if everyone else is doing it, and even non-regular employees have to keep working. Eating out is rare, and marriage feels like an impossible dream for many.
From an outsider’s perspective, simply having these job opportunities and a relatively stable life might seem like a privilege. Still, I think this thread captures the very real struggles and feelings of Japanese people today.
